There are a number of different acne brands on the market for over the counter treatments. Most of them are made of one or a combination of four different compounds, in order to treat the acne. Benzonyl peroxide is a common treatment to fight acne, especially common in creams, gels and washes. Some of the most famous brands including the compounds are Clearasil, Oxy-10, Fistex and Persa-Gel. The main thing with benzonyl peroxide is that it kills the acne bacteria and treats the skin disease. Some people are allergic to benzonyl peroxide. The skin of those people gets irritated and inflamed by the treatment. Benzonyl peroxide is also known for having a bleaching effect on hair and fabrics. Salicylic acid is a compound used by brands as Stri-dex, Clearasil Clearstick and Oxy Night Watch. The treatment often comes as pads or applicators. Salicylic acid prevents the pores from clogging in the first place, making no room for the bacteria to get stuck inside. Salicylic acids are especially effective when it comes to fighting blackheads and whiteheads. The salicylic acid should not be combined with other treatments, as this can get the skin irritated and thus make the acne problem worse. Sulfur is an effective compound when fighting acne for adults. It is found in the brand Clearasil´s adult care cream. This is the oldest treatment of acne known today, and the tradition of using sulfur against skin diseases is at least a couple of thousand years old. The main effect on the skin is a peeling and drying effect, which can reduce the presence of blackheads and whiteheads. With a little bit of luck, the sulfur also prevents new black- or whiteheads by increasing cell adhesion. The side effects with the sulfur treatment are that it smells pretty bad, and it might pale the skin. The adult version of acne can be treated with products including resorcinol in combination with other compounds such as sulfur. This combination of compounds is found in treatments as Clearasil adult care and Tinted. It is a compound used to fight other skin diseases (like eczema or psoriasis) as well as acne. The downside to resorcinol is that it can cause redness, irritation and peeling of the skin. Try to avoid other treatments or soaps harsh on the skin at the same time as using treatments with resorcinol. You should also avoid using alcoholic products on the skin and medications.
